Community health

Your local health department received a grant to create a new initiative designed to decrease obesity rates. Your health department wants to create a team of teachers, parents, community leaders, and public health professionals to develop an intervention. In your opinion, which (if any) cognitive and affective methods would be useful? Why?

Please include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, “Tom’s response to Susan’s comment.”

In my opinion, combating obesity would be accomplished most effectively utilizing affective methods vs cognitive. Cognitive methods could be resourceful as far as collecting data and gathering research on the subject of obesity. However, when it comes down to proper interventions, affective methods would be most useful because affective methods stimulate emotion. Obesity is a challenge for any involved, so to stimulate the emotions of all involved would make it more personal I feel, and would motivate others more so than objective information. For example, role playing could help individuals to identify their triggers when it comes to things that may influence obesity such as stress, and overeating, etc. Small group discussions could provide encouragement and support to all involved and share various perspectives. Simulation would be helpful to all in order to help them understand what it is like to live with obesity.
