Next Tuesday, 11/27, I will be hosting a movie night that is sponsored by the Honors Institute. It is on the Dale Mabry campus DLRC 106 from 6:00-8:00. We will be watching “Joyeux Noel,” a movie about the Christmas Peace during the first year of World War I. After the movie we will have a discussion about some of the historical aspects of it.
More information on the film: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424205/ (Links to an external site.)
As part of this event, I’m also building it into an extra credit assignment worth 20 points. To get the credit you will need to do three things:
- Watch the movie! It will be more fun if you can join us, but you may also watch the film on your own.
- Read the following document on a classic definition of Nationalism: https://www.orwellfoundation.com/the-orwell-foundation/orwell/essays-and-other-works/notes-on-nationalism/ (Links to an external site.)
- Answer the following question with a response of at least 300 words. I will put a discussion board up where you may submit your response.
Based on the movie, reading, and (especially for EUH 2001 classes) other readings, how did Nationalism contribute to World War I? Make sure to support your answer with examples from your sources.
