negotiation and conflict resolution 31

Discussion…………………………

Hypothetically speaking, you are assigned to a committee of three to decide on a dress code for University Staff and Faculty. Only two of the three votes are required to pass this policy. In this situation you are one of the two agreeing to a dress code. What steps might you take to gain the cooperation of the third party after the policy has been initiated.

Note:-

Read and respond to at least two (2) of your classmates’ posts. In your response to your classmates, consider comparing your articles to those of your classmates. Below are additional suggestions on how to respond to your classmates’ discussions:

· Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence or research.

· Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

· Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research.

· Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.

· Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.

· Expand on your colleagues’ postings by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.

Replie to first topic:-

Giving the opinion or to get the consent of third party must be done cautiously to assure that the final decision will bring a positive effect on the university. I would first analyze the outcome of passing the policy or not passing the policy. Since I’m in favor of the policy I will have to consider the outcome of the passing the bill.

For a university having a dress code will make the staff look professional and well mannered. Dress code will bring a positive impact on the university environment and their teaching. It is important for the faculty and teaching staff to have proper attire and to groom.

Considering the positive impact, I would get the third-party cooperation. Another facet of the negotiation for the third-party approval is to consider the negative impact it will have when the policy is not passed. For any negotiation it is important to let he other party know why they must agree for our agreement, it will make them understand the importance of our proposal and minimize the chances of saying ‘no’ (Maiwald, 2015).

Having a dress code will discipline the staff and differentiate them from the students. And as well improve the good will of the university.

Steps I would take to gain the cooperation of the third party in brief:

· I would first consider hearing their argument and opinion about the dress code.

· If they are already in favor of the bill, no other work required but if they are in between or favoring ‘no’ then I would go with the third step.

· Explain the positive changes that a dress code can bring by quoting the universities which already implemented the code.

· Also consider, what happens if they say no and did not implement the code (Stolz, 2018).

Reply 2:-

It is inevitable to have a conflict of opinions in the place of work because work brings people together from different races, religions, and norms (Griffith, 2007). Dressing code is one controversial argument in most organizations due to the difference in culture and religion across the workers. It is therefore expected that different employees will have different opinions, personalities, and goals as far as dressing code is concerned. Now, for the third committee member who lost the vote, I will use the steps below to get him on board. However, I will not make him feel oppressed or neglected in the process.

The most initial step will be to find out why the person voted against the majority opinion (Griffith, 2007). It is important to have enough information from the person for us to find a way to accommodate them. I will use some questions which are designed towards achieving a specific goal. Within the questions, I will give him the opportunity to share his side of the story and clearly understand why he did not support the newly initiated dress code. I will use this chance to demonstrate impartiality and try best to understand the matter from his point of view.

The second step will be looking into his opinions. It is possible that the difference in opinion arose from a minor issue may be from his experience. After understanding his point of view, I will then try to inculcate his ideas to the winning policy. I will try to convince him how the opinions he raised are addressed in the new dress code policy, or how it can be manipulated to include his honest opinions. However, his views will be considered for inclusion only if they work for the good of the organization.

Thirdly, I will beseech him to accept the new dress code policy and be part of it. After assuring him that his opinions will be considered and taken care of in the new system, it is likely that he will accept to join the majority and work as a team. I will appreciate his efforts and braveness of giving his honest opinions to help the organization move forward. I will then assure him how his contributions will benefit the organization in the future.

The last step will be the agreement art (Moore, 2014. There could be handshaking in this previous step, to show that he is part of the new policy and that we will work as a team henceforth. In extreme case, we can write a contract where specific actions are stipulated. He will then be assured that his opinions will be appreciated even in the future.
