Assignment Brief – In your assignment you should:

Please note that your lecturer will give you deadlines for the tasks below and may set you additional work to assist you in the completion of the stages below. Your lecturer will also give you ideas about work you can be doing in the background in order to prepare your research report. For example, throughout the stages identified below, you should be putting notes into the relevant sections of your draft research report.

  • Read around the subject in order to come up with an aim for your research.
  • Write a draft aim and discuss it with your lecturer
  • Once your aim is agreed, continue to read around the subject making sure that you are confident that your aim is achievable and that you will be able to link your findings to sociological material.
  • Decide on your methods and sampling technique
  • Write a brief research proposal using the sheet provided and submit this to your lecturer
  • Write a draft questionnaire/interview schedule (or other if agreed with your lecturer) and discuss it with your lecturer
  • Write up any forms or cover notes you intend to include when you approach people about taking part in your research. These should include a statement about the nature and purpose of your research, a statement about anonymity, confidentiality and data use, consent and the right to withdraw.
  • Gain ethical approval for your research from your lecturer before starting – failure to do this could lead to disciplinary action
  • Conduct your research in order to produce your primary data
  • Analyse the findings of your research and draw conclusions
  • Write up all sections of the research report fully (these should all be partially completed in note form already)
  • Submit your research report by the deadline
