No, it is not morally permissible to lie to someone, but there are some circumstances where this will not cause any harm and is permissible. One thing that is for sure, a lie will always come to the light, usually at the most inopportune time. An example of telling a lie to make more people happy than telling the truth is when our high school band performed at a pep rally and the conductor assured the band and the whole gym that they (the band) were ready to compete in the state championship Battle of the Bands, this announcement made the band members and the attendees at the pep rally very happy and excited. But if the truth was told, they were not ready, they were not experienced enough, but that announcement made more people happy than telling the truth and there was no harm done because everyone knew they were not experienced enough. But it was a great morale lifter.

Yes, I think it was the right thing to do in this circumstance. There was no harm done and no misconception perpetrated, it was not meant to deceive. I think Immanuel Kant would say that it was morally admirable because the conductor made this announcement because it was the right thing to do. Not tooting his own horn on how great of a conductor he was, but simply because it was the right thing to do. I agree with Kant. What good would it have done for the whole school to be reminded that they were not good enough?

A positive aspect of the deontological theory is that it instructs people to question whether or not the action they are thinking of doing would be okay if others universally did the same act in a similar situation (Mosser, 2013). A negative aspect is that it does not adequately account for everyday complex issues that may arise such as lying to a spouse to conceal a present or lying to a child about Santa Claus (Mosser, 2013). Deontology attempts to get people to do good for the better of others while sacrificing an individual’s own goals and motivations.
