PART !: DEVELOP A WORKSHOP TO INFORM FAMILIES: Currently, technology seems to dominate the way we communicate and convey information. Emails, texts, electronic newsletters, and program websites are just some of the formats available to early childhood professionals to communicate with and inform families. Clearly, there are some limitations to these formats that include lack of accessibility by some families, language issues, lack of visible, emotional responses, impersonality, and family preference for face-to-face contact. To counteract those limitations, a face-to-face activity is sometimes preferential for conveying information to families. Often, early childhood professionals choose a family workshop to get to know families better and directly convey information to families. Benefits of a workshop include opportunities for building relationships with families, asking questions, and receiving immediate responses, families meeting and interacting with other families, and helping families to feel included in their child’s education. Think about your responses to the following questions: What were some of the positive aspects of workshops that you have attended? What were some of the negative aspects of workshops that you attended? Assignment Instructions: For this part of your final assignment, you will have an opportunity to revisit course concepts as you use a workshop format to communicate information about developmentally- appropriate, multicultural, anti-bias classrooms. Please carefully and thoroughly read the following scenario. You are a teacher either in a preschool or a first-grade classroom (select one). You have worked hard to develop a developmentally-appropriate, multicultural, anti-bias classroom. You want the families of the children to understand what the goals, strategies, and outcomes of a developmentally-appropriate multicultural, anti-bias classroom are. You decide the best way to communicate this information is through a face-to-face, 1-hour hands-on workshop. Your workshop will include the following sections listed below. Each section must be explained completely and thoughtfully, demonstrating your understanding of course concepts. A one-sentence response is not sufficient. Each section should have a minimum of five sentences. For example, your discussion of the workshop title should include at least five sentences as you explain why you selected that title. Workshop title (Explain why you selected this title.) Workshop goals (List the workshop goals and explain why you selected these goals.) Workshop outcomes (Indicate what you expect families to have experienced and learned by the end of the workshop.) Methods of presentation for the workshop (Reveal the adult learning principles that this workshop must adhere to so that you will want to use a variety of strategies for sharing information and involving families (e.g., lecture, discussion, Powerpoint presentation, hands-on activities, question and answer?) Statement of Welcome to the families (For the next part of this assignment, create a handout for the families. In this workshop, discuss the handout that you will give to the families.) Workshop content with details (In this section, you will demonstrate your mastery of the course concepts.) Workshop evaluation (Describe how (evaluation form, observation, discussion, etc.) you will know that all families felt welcomed, included, respected, and responded to during this workshop. How did you accommodate families’ languages, abilities, cultures, child care, transportation needs?) Follow-up (How will you support the families’ learning on this topic after this workshop?) Length: 8-10 pages, not including title or reference pages References: Include in the workshop description a minimum of five scholarly references, plus your textbook and other professional resources (professional organization websites, government websites, etc.). Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards………PART 2: CREATE A WORKSHOP HANDOUT TO INFORM FAMILIES! Instructions To keep the ideas of a workshop alive, it is helpful to give families an informational format that they can take with them. These are often called “handouts.” When creating a handout, it is important to clearly and succinctly summarize ideas, and share resources (websites, book titles, contact information should there be additional questions, to name a few). For this part of your assignment, you will use yet another form of family communication and that is, a family-friendly handout for the workshop that you developed to share information on a multicultural, anti-bias curriculum. This handout, as part of your workshop, should demonstrate how you welcome family engagement and are inclusive and responsive to all families. For this part of your final assignment, you will have an opportunity to revisit course concepts as you develop a family-friendly handout to accompany the workshop that you developed on a multicultural, anti-bias early childhood classroom. Be sure to include the following in a clearly written, well-organized handout: Summaries of the content of the workshop A discussion of why multicultural literature is important with a list of at least four multicultural, anti-bias books appropriate for the age of their child At least two websites with description of the websites where families can find information on developmentally-appropriate, multicultural, anti-bias classrooms At least two activities that families could do at home with children to support multicultural, anti-bias understanding. Visual images and graphics Length: 2-4 pages, not including title and references pages References: Include in the handout a minimum of three scholarly references, plus your textbook and other professional resources (professional organization websites, government websites, etc.). Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.
